Fairbanks

Fairbanks, Alaska located in the interior of Alaska and the second largest city in the state. Here you'll find the northern lights in winter that will change the way you see the earth, while the summer midnight sun charms you.

Greet the Arctic wilderness on your doorstep or be amazed by our magnificent neighbor, Denali. Be transported into gold rush past or engage in the art and culture of this vibrant and diverse city.

Make your journey into the heart of the Last Frontier and experience the light, energy and warmth found only in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Take a deep breath and explore Fairbanks! With the summer sun shining nearly 24 hours a day, we are simply bursting with energy. Strike it rich panning for gold, float the Chena River, mingle with reindeer and musk oxen, cool off in an ice museum, take a refreshing hike, or be inspired by brilliant art galleries, museums, and historic sites. Late August to April you have a great chance to see the shimmering light of the aurora borealis. A host of other fascinating activities and events are unveiled during the winter.

Northern Lights Welcome to one of the best places on earth for experiencing the beautiful and mysterious northern lights. Bright, energetic curtains of yellow, green, red or even purple light brighten our night skies regularly. Fairbanks is situated within a ring-shaped region around the North Pole called the auroral oval. This location provides a terrific balance of occurrence, frequency and activity. Plus, our continental climate offers many more clear nights than you would find in a coastal area. While intensity varies, the most common yellow-green glow occurs heavily between late August and April. Prime viewing time is late evening through the wee hours of the morning.

Gold Rush History Historic visitor attractions and modern-day mining operations still celebrate the quest for gold. See the largest public display of gold in the state at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. Visit the Pedro Monument in tribute to gold's first discovery. Try your hand at gold panning and uncover your own Alaskan gold. Find that perfect gold nugget souvenir to take back home. Discover for yourself one of the many reasons Fairbanks is called the "Golden Heart" city.

Gateway to Arctic Alaska Fairbanks is your gateway to Alaska's vast Interior and expansive Arctic. The White Mountains National Recreation Area is just north of town, with a wild river and extensive trail system. Head north to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. Access the North Slope or the Arctic Circle. Visit Barrow, Fort Yukon, Anaktuvuk Pass, Galena, Coldfoot, Beaver, Ruby, Bettles and the Yukon River.

Shopping You'll find the shopping in Fairbanks a little different. Alaska Native hand-made items crafted with astonishing detail are common, along with standard daily needs just across the aisle.

Dining Every area has dining options that is classic for that location and Interior Alaska is no different. Not only can you sample the local fare, you can also partake of wonderful international dining or get a phenomenal dessert.
